Scorpio Rising (1964)

All in all, I think making this film was merely an excuse for Kenneth Anger to spy on masculine, dressed in leather motorcycle riders. The cinematography is splendid and the film is definitely an eye candy, but also pointless and boring. Moments before the end we are flashed with a picture of Hitler and the image of a crucifix, and all of a sudden "Scorpio Rising" has an underlying message and a meaning. Yeah, right.

Happiness (1998)

"Happiness" is an ironic, bitter, self-sarcastic study on despair, suffering and agony, an unholy satire of the desires that spring from darkest depths of the human psyche, with extravagant, twisted characters that however, are no caricatures; on the contrary, they feel horrifyingly familiar. Uncomfortable, disturbing and unique, this one is a must-see.

Shortbus (2006)

Shortbus is basically a feel-good movie, with the difference that it contains many provocative, yet not arousing sex scenes. Nice mix of comedy and drama, I honestly enjoyed it and it made my day.

Sweet Movie (1974)

In "Sweet Movie" Makavejev manages to squeeze in a 98' film some difficult political concepts using hardcore symbolism and disturbing imagery. To fully comprehend this film one must take into account that Makavejev is Serbian, and Serbia has both prospered and suffered under communist regime. Through murderous Marxist whores, conservative hyprocrites, hollow revolutionists and deranged hippies, Makavejev ponders on the socialist movement's failure and wonders whether it was worth the sacrifices.

O thiasos (1975)

I'm not an Angelopoulos fan at all, however being Greek and from a leftist background I was deeply moved by this film. I know it's profoundly long but then again it's an accurate portrayal of the entire greek postwar history. This film is a great history lesson, although it can indeed be somewhat exhausting.
